Nourishment to Thrive

One of the learnings from our Next Meal Conference held earlier this year in Stafford was that around the world low income families and homeless individuals often do not have access to nutritious food. It is a critical and often overlooked issue. Nutrition plays a vital role in maintaining health and well-being, yet for some, obtaining sufficient and balanced meals can be a daily struggle.

Homelessness and food insecurity are intrinsically linked. For those who rely on food banks, shelters, and public meal programs for their sustenance there is often a nutrition deficiency. Unfortunately, food banks and charities often provide meals that are high in calories but low in nutritional value. This imbalance can lead to a host of health problems, including malnutrition, obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. The lack of consistent access to fresh fruits, vegetables, and protein-rich foods exacerbates these issues, making it harder to maintain physical and mental health.

We have been very lucky at House of Bread to have had qualified chefs in our kitchen ensuring that the food we provide in our café is of a high nutritional value. We aim to continue this by teaming up with a wonderful charity, the Country Food Trust. They are a food charity whose aim is to raise funds to provide high-protein, nutritious meals to those in need. They distribute these meals and raw meat to foodbanks and community kitchens, like ourselves, across the UK.

We are delighted to be soon receiving packs of raw venison from the Country Food Trust which will be used in our menus at Café 43. Venison is a naturally lean, protein rich meat and is a great alternative to beef. It is richer in protein than beef which means that it will fill you up and keep you sated for longer. It has lots of iron and is rich in vitamin B1 and B6 as well as niacin and riboflavin. Our kitchen staff will soon be adding venison to their menu, bringing more wonderfully balanced, nutritional meals to all those who come to Café 43 and share a meal with us.

In the fight against homelessness and of meeting the needs of low income individuals and families, nutrition must be recognized as a fundamental need. By addressing the nutritional challenges faced by some in our society, we can improve their overall health, well-being, and chances of rebuilding their lives. Together, we can create a community where everyone has access to the nourishment they need to thrive.
