Tuesdays are when House of Bread gets crafty! Led by a team of volunteers, our afternoon session, Crafty Hands, teaches a small group new artistic skills – from collaging, crochet and knitting to macrame, sketching and painting. It is an invite only session that enables the more socially isolated and vulnerable to come into Café 43 in a safe, friendly and calm environment.
Our Crafty Hands group have been getting ready for the Christmas season by making some of our tree decorations. Using wool, thread and cardboard they have made some beautiful Santa hats. And if you pop over to the Christmas Tree Festival at St. Mary’s in Stafford, you’ll find the House of Bread tree decked with bespoke decorations, including knitted Santas and paper angels.
Our art therapy project has been very successful with around twenty friends taking part. Being part of a creative project is rewarding in itself, and even the anticipation of creating art promotes wellbeing. It’s a fun way to relieve stress and have some restorative time for self-reflection and self-expression. As Pablo Picasso famously said, ‘Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life.’
