We’d like to share with you a wonderful initiative that is currently thriving in Stafford – SPARE. Following a huge donation in 2023 from a Christian festival at the Staffordshire County Showground we had three vans crammed full of food. So what to do with it? Share it, of course, and so SPARE was born.
Sharing Produce and Rehoming Extras! A simple and effective way of enabling people in need to access food and supplies, as well as white goods and furniture, whilst at the same time reducing the number of items that go to landfill. It’s a win win. SPARE is a Whats App group whereby members post surplus items they have – it could be crates of strawberries or sacks of potatoes, or even a pallet of slow cookers – it all goes on the SPARE Whats app group where someone can request the items. It’s a great way of linking local community groups so everyone knows what resources are available. As a result, everyone benefits, charities, recipients or donors – and less ‘stuff’ goes to landfill.
Currently we have 36 members, some are from local charities, others individuals doing great work in the community. When asked what makes SPARE work so well, founder Damon Preece said. ‘It’s the simplicity and the fantastic goodwill of the members who are absolutely committed to the most basic act of kindness – sharing.’
