As a charity founded on the Christian belief that we are called by God to love our neighbour, we believe that the coming General Election is a time when our voices should be heard. The laws and policies that come out of Westminster have a direct impact on the lives of the most vulnerable in our community, and as such, our questions to local candidates and engagement with them, and ultimately our vote, is a chance for us to contribute to the common good of all.
There are many causes of homelessness and though many of them are complex, most cases are preventable. Lack of affordable housing, poverty and unemployment, poor education, unaffordable rent increases, substance abuse and life events such as relational break-down or losing a job are just some of the causes that can push people into homelessness. Sometimes, people who leave the army, care or prison, or women escaping a violent or abusive relationship can find themselves on the street. Whoever forms the next government will have to find solutions to these issues if homelessness is to be a thing of the past, and we as the electorate, must hold our MPs to account.
At House of Bread, we would encourage all voters to consider all candidates through the lens of biblical values, which are to care for the poor and defend the oppressed and promote justice and righteousness.
